The sand carpet in La Orovata is emerging
In the historic town of La Orotava, the largest sand carpet in the world is being prepared for the Corpus Cristi festival (June 10th) , in front of the La Orotava Town Hall.
The plaza measures 46.5 metres x 10.50 metres, with a total surface of 950 square metres, and 912 metres of usable space. Materials used to make this magnificent carpet are chiefly collected from the volcanic region of Las Cañadas, and the sands’ colours are all totally natural. Some sand is sifted in situ if possible and brought down from Teide almostready for use, the rest is brought down in chunks that have to be ground and pounded before they can be sifted finely enough for the carpets.
